My first ever solo trip was to Brussels in 2017. I chose a country where I could speak the language as my first solo trip to make the first experience go as well as possible. People in the “travel community” seem to have an issue with Brussels for some reason, but I enjoyed it.

I went on a “free” walking tour, me a girl from Taiwan and we got drunk together, turning a pretty dull day into quite a funny night. I only went for one night and stayed in a mixed dorm for the first (and last) time.

I actually only paid £5 for return flights with Ryanair, which is very cheap, but not the cheapest I’ve seen online. You know these “I found the cheapest flights in the world” YouTubers. They chat nonsense. I saw Leeds to Lanzarote for under £4 return last Christmas. I was already away so couldn’t use them.

Fun: 4/5

Safety: 4/5

Things to do: 3/5

Value for money: 2/5

Overall: 3/5

I might go back if there’s a cheap flight, but I’ll get a private room or an apartment and stay for longer. I might even use Brussels as a base to jump on the train to Luxembourg.
